Great Apps

Pixelpipe (Free) – The Nokia N8 takes fantastic photos and videos. This app lets you share your captured moments across over 100 social networks, photo/video sites and blogs, and online storage around the globe. It supports other files too. You can download it from the Ovi Store, but we recommend the latest beta from Beta Labs.

Gravity (Free/$9.99) – This app makes the built-in social app for Nokia look like crap. Use this for your Twitter and Facebook needs. You can grab it from the Ovi Store, but we recommend taking the braver route and trying the latest alpha version from the Mobileways website.

Panorama (Free) – I love this app! Take panoramic photos in just a few steps and prepare to be amazed at the results. Download from the Ovi Store.

Gameloft HD Games ($2.99) – Check the beautiful HD games from Gameloft once you’re bored with Angry Birds. Pick from titles like Hero of Sparta, Assassin’s Creed, Guitar Rock Tour 2, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem, and more. Get them at the Ovi Store.

TuneWiki (Free/$4.99) – I wish there was a Pandora app, but TuneWiki more that makes up for it. Sing along to the lyrics shown on the screen, watch music videos, or stream songs through the internet radio feature. The free version have ads, while you pay $4.99 for the Pro version without the ads. Available at the Ovi Store.

Ovi Maps beta (Free) – Immediately replace the existing Ovi Maps application on the Nokia N8 with the beta version. It includes several enhancements, but the biggest change in this update is the ability to download Maps directly to your phone without a computer. Grab it from Beta Labs.

Joikuspot (Free/$9.99) – Turns your phone to a 3G wifi hotspot. The premium version adds password protection and more. This is handy if you travel around with other internet-dependent devices such as laptops or tablets. Available at the Ovi Store.

Great Accessories

Sandisk 16GB Class 2 microSD card ($19) – The Nokia N8 has an internal storage of 16GB, but if that’s not enough for you, invest in a name-brand card with a high class rating. Sandisk works well on the Nokia N8 and it only costs $19!

Tripod & Adapter ($15) – Any serious photographer has a tripod. Step up your game by adding a tripod holder to the Nokia N8. Useful for self-portraits and situations when stable photos are required.

Proporta USB Turbocharger 5000 ($49) – The Nokia N8 already has a decent battery life, but if you require MORE power, this is for you. This Proporta battery pack is about the size of a Nokia N900, and can fully recharge the N8 three more times. It’s great for social media power users who upload nonstop photos and videos. It’s also handy at airports.

ProClip Car Mounts & Holders ($65) – If you’re going to take advantage of the Nokia N8′s free turn-by-turn voice navigation, the ProClips are the best of the best in car mounts/holders. Just ask anyone that has one of these, and they’ll swear by it. They are made to fit your SPECIFIC car and SPECIFIC phone. They might be expensive, but quality is top-notch.

Tips

  • You can download apps from the Ovi Store, but don’t forget to check Beta Labs or developers’ websites for more apps you might want to try.
  • Pinch the camera app screen to quickly switch between widescreen 9MP and 4:3 aspect 12MP photos.
  • Forget about getting a screen protector for the Nokia N8. It has Gorilla Glass display which is very hard to damage.
  • If the N8 becomes unresponsive, hold the power button for 8 seconds to force shutdown.
  • In case you want to hard reset to factory settings, type *#7370# at the homescreen and enter 12345 as the password.

Feel free to share your own recommended apps, accessories, and tips for the Nokia N8 newbies.
